This blog features Vintage Gospel Albums, the majority of which were recorded in the 1970's. Many of the LPs featured here were created by Cincinnati, Ohio area artists on private press recording and production labels such as Jewel, Rite and QCA (Queen City Album). Here you will find the Good, Bad & Ugly but never The Lackluster! I'm here to have fun and hope you will share in my process of discovery!
Both of those samples are so different. The first sounds like 60s pop and free jazz, and the second sounds more like the southern Bluegrass gospel that I know you’re more accustomed to in that area. I’m curious as to whether the rest of the groups included on that record favor the Bluegrass side of things, or are different like the brass ensemble?
ReplyDeleteI think of the form more as "country". It's a blend to be sure... but grass has an different sound to it. I do have some grass gospel records blogged here. The "brass" selection (there are two tracks from the same group on this record), is rare. And out of the 100s of gospel records I've listened to... I've never heard anything like it.
ReplyDeleteOh Happy Day sounded pretty good until they started blowing those horns - cant believe all the sour notes the sax player was hitting. Rare indeed!
